Cumberland deputies shoot an armed Harrison man who fired at them

A Harrison man who was armed and threatening to harm himself was shot and wounded by three Cumberland County deputies after he fired at officers Wednesday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said.

Police responded to a home on Hawk Ridge Road in Harrison after receiving a call from a man who said he was armed and planned to hurt himself, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Wednesday evening. Police say the man, identified as 57-year-old Arthur Lefebvre, was “uncooperative” and fired several shots at officers when they arrived at the residence.

Officers learned there were family members in danger inside the home, the sheriff’s office said. After deputies unsuccessfully attempted to communicate with Lefebvre, he came outside, confronted the officers with his gun, and three officers shot and wounded him.

Lefebvre suffered serious injuries and was taken to Maine Medical Center via Lifeflight. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, the sheriff’s office said.

The officers will be placed on administrative leave, as is standard practice, while the Maine Attorney General’s Office investigates the use of deadly force. The office did not find a police shooting unjustified since 1990 at least.

The identities of the deputies involved were not released Wednesday.
