Teenager hospitalized with ‘traumatic brain injuries’ after running away

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — It’s Monday around 6:30 in the evening.

“He was going to the gym, which is across the street. As far as I know, while he was crossing the road, when the light was green, a truck drove into him and he kept driving, he didn’t stop,” said Cristina Melluzzi.

She said she did not know her oldest child, Luca Melluzzi-Silk, 18, was injured. Her husband had to break the news to her.

“He said I don’t need to panic, but Luca had an accident. I said what do you mean he had an accident? He said someone got into him,” she said.

An incident report was filed with the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office. Melluzzi-Silk was crossing the 441 on his way to the gym when he was hit by a truck. It is assumed that the driver did not stop. He is now in intensive care at St. Mary. His mother said his body is double the size because of the swelling.

“He has a traumatic brain injury; he’s had multiple bleeds on the brain, he’s got a fractured skull, so at this point we have to wait,” she said.

Melluzzi said her Black Diamond subdivision community at her children’s schools has been phenomenal. She said people brought food, gave moral support to watch the other two children.

Caroline Kelly is looking for change at the intersection where the hit happened.

“People die, people get hurt, and these are preventable things if people just do what they’re supposed to do,” Kelly said.

Melluzzi said she is thankful her son is alive. But he wants to thank the people who stopped to help Melluzzi-Silk.

“We have immense gratitude and we owe them everything for saving Luca and for calling 911 and helping our son and we would love to know who these people are,” she said.

A GoFundMe page was established. So far, the page has raised over $6,000 in 24 hours. We’re told that anything above Melluzzi-Silk’s medical bills will go directly to St. Mary.
