Two 14-year-olds arrested for a string of burglaries in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS — Colorado Springs Police (CSPD) have arrested two 14-year-old boys they say are connected to several recent break-ins and burglaries. The teenagers were taken into custody on Nov. 8 and are being held at the Zebulon Pike Youth Services Center.

The teenagers are linked to four burglaries and robberies, including at the same liquor store on Oct. 12 and 13, as well as multiple carjackings and threatening a witness with a handgun. Police say the stolen vehicles were used to break into businesses during the night.

One of the teenagers was first arrested in October, days after the murders were committed; but was eventually released with a GPS monitor. Now, the teenager has been taken into custody again. CSPD says both are connected to multiple incidents dating back to August 24th.

Their alleged crimes include a burglary of an El Paso County pawn shop, an attempted burglary of a gun store and two carjackings. They are accused of stealing 28 handguns from a second pawn shop.

At this time, CSPD says they do not believe these teenagers are connected to any of the break and take incidents at local vape shops.

Local juvenile detention space depleted as break-in crime trend continues

News5 continued to follow these murders and covered the issue extensively. In early October, News5’s Maggie Bryan reported on why juveniles involved in these crimes are usually back on the street within days of being arrested.

Law enforcement officials and the 4th District Attorney’s Office cited a lack of space in local juvenile facilities as contributing to the quick release times.
