Oregon Ducks’ Dan Lanning wears boxing gloves to help avoid penalties

The No. 1 Oregon ducks travel 2,000 miles to Madison, Wisconsin for a Big Ten showdown with the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday, November 16th at 4:30pm PT. It will be Oregon coach Dan Lanning’s first time going to Madison, WI and Camp Randall Stadium.

It’s an important game as a win would make Oregon 11-0 for just the second time in program history, joining the 2010 mark.

Coach from Oregon Dan Lanning evaluated his teams’ practices as the Ducks prepare for the Badgers and the first-year starting quarterback Braedyn Locke.

Coach Lanning also addressed an injury update for the running back Jordan James and defensive end Jordan Burch.

“Just continuing to evaluate them to see if they’re available,” Lanning said. “We had these guys helping us. So we’ll see what that looks like.”

A major focus this week is limiting penalties – the Ducks committed 12 penalties for 95 yards against Maryland, both season highs. Coach Lanning is pleased with the improved focus on cleaning up penalties.

“We had five today,” Lanning said after Wednesday’s practice. “We had 13 last Wednesday so it was cleaner. But it could still be cleaner than it is.”

“(The secondary) wore boxing gloves all week. That helped,” Lanning said.

Lanning on motivating his team:

“The world is really important in our sport. You have to be able to do the simple things consistently, over and over and over. I think the challenge for you as a coach is how you can make the world interesting. How can you keep saying we’re going to push and do things that are really simple but keep it fresh for our players? So that’s always our challenge.”

What coaches has Lanning studied for motivational techniques:

“Anything and everything. We’ll shoot from anywhere, whatever we see, we try to use that as motivation.”

Attention to details this week:

“Today’s training on Wednesday was much better than last Wednesday. But still more room to grow.”

Lanning on the impact of Oregon defensive end Matayo Uiagalelei:

“He is an impact player. We had high expectations of him when he got here and he exceeded those expectations with the way he worked. It’s a very good room – that outer support room. He’s definitely a big part of it.”

Lanning on the biggest growth area over the last eight games:

“Just playing as a team. Playing uniquely as a team. I think there was a really big growth in those moments of having each other six – to support each other – in moments. I think that shows consistently, whether it’s saving offense. the defense or defense saves the offense or special teams coming up with a big play and really focusing on the next play.

Matayo Uiagalelei leads the team in sacks – what is his ceiling?

“He’s incredibly talented. That’s where it starts. And I think that camera is very well trained, but he works really hard to take the details and execute them. He has a plan. Our entire front has a contingency plan every week and part of it is how do we attack it? The number one arrow in any league, in any division of football is effort. So you have to give maximum effort in every rush, because there is always someone ready to block you. You have to beat that block.”

Lanning on what stands out about Wisconsin defensive lineman Elijah Hills:

Lanning: “Twitch. He has a great jerk. And I think again a lot of their production from their defense, it’s hand in hand, it works together. Their coverage allows them to get pressure up front and they have some guys who do really well on pick and choose plays up front.”
