  • Actor James Van Der Beek, 47, has revealed that he has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer.
  • “I’ve been dealing with this almost in secret for a while,” he said.
  • He detailed his symptoms and diagnosis.

In August of last year, James Van Der Beek was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancerhe said recently People. Until now, he and his family have been processing it privately, but the 47-year-old actor feels it’s time to share his journey with the world.

“I’ve been dealing with this kind of secretly for a while, and in the past, I’ve found it helpful and cathartic to share things publicly,” he said. said. “And I found a lot of support that way. But more than that, I really wanted to raise awareness.”

The Dawson’s Creek the star said he noticed symptoms when he started experiencing changes in his bowel movements. “I thought maybe I need to stop the coffee,” he recalled. “Or maybe don’t put cream in your coffee. But when I gave it up and it didn’t get better, I thought, “Okay, I’d better check this out.”

He underwent a colonoscopy, and upon waking from a haze of anesthesia, his doctor confirmed that he had cancer. “I think I went into shock a little bit,” he said, and then it was full speed scheduling appointments, tests, treatments, attending them and repeating them. “I wasn’t prepared for how much of a full-time job it is,” he added. (Van Der Beek has chosen not yet to disclose the specific treatments he underwent, per People. But he said “if you’ve heard about it, I’ve probably touched it.”)

Colorectal cancer is cancer of the colon and/or rectum, according to American Cancer Societyand most cases begin as a growth on the inner lining of the organs. One in five people with colorectal cancer is under 55, the society says, and the disease can spread to other parts of the body. Fortunately, Van Der Beek remained located, which has a 91% survival rate at five years.

However, the father of six was shocked to learn of his diagnosis as he had no family history of the disease and was leading an active and healthy life. “I’ve always associated cancer with age and an unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle,” he said. “But I was in amazing cardiovascular shape. I tried to eat healthy – or as I knew it at the time.”

During the depth of treatment, there were times when “it was really just sitting down and emotionally scratching the bottom of despair,” he explained. But now, he’s clinging to positivity. “I am very cautiously optimistic. I’m in a place of healing, my energy levels are great,” he said. “When I’ve been completely out of the woods for what feels like a responsible amount of time, I’ll come back and let you know.”
