Gender-sensitive strategies for building resilience in agri-food systems amid climate shocks

Climate shocks such as droughts, floods and extreme weather events disproportionately affect food systems in regions heavily dependent on agriculture. The distribution of these effects on productivity, food security, nutrition and livelihoods is uneven, with women and marginalized groups typically showing less resilience to such shocks. This disparity is due to several factors, including limited access to resources, increased workloads, limited participation in decision-making processes, and social norms that hinder adaptive capacity. Recent studies have highlighted the critical intersection of climate shocks, gender and resilience, highlighting the need for innovations that promote resilient and equitable food systems. Despite growing recognition of gender roles in agricultural resilience, there remains a significant gap in the design and implementation of gender-sensitive strategies to enhance resilience to climate-related risks.

This research topic aims to address this gap by collecting interdisciplinary studies that explore innovative approaches to enhance resilience in food systems, focusing on gender-sensitive solutions. The aim is to compile evidence and methodologies that policymakers and practitioners can use to implement gender-inclusive interventions. These interventions should aim to strengthen the resilience of both men and women against climate shocks and contribute to the transformation of agri-food systems. In doing so, the research seeks to highlight the dual role of women, both as victims and as agents of resilience and transformative change in agri-food systems.

To gather more information on the intersection of climate shocks, gender and resilience, we welcome articles that address, but are not limited to, the following topics:
– Women as agents of change in increasing resilience and sustainability in agri-food systems.
– Innovative, gender-sensitive strategies that increase resilience to climate shocks.
– Case studies of successful gender mainstreaming interventions in food systems.
– Innovations for food system transformations.
– Policy recommendations for mainstreaming gender considerations for climate change resilience.
– Female leadership in innovation and resilience in food systems.
– Empowerment, food security and nutritional outcomes of climate change resilience.
– Gender-based community initiatives for climate change resilience.

Key words: climate shocks, gender, resilience, food systems, sustainable agriculture
