Google’s new ADB swap mode could make Android phone upgrades faster and less stressful

If you’ve ever traded in your old Android phone, you know the wait can be endless as you hope it qualifies for full trade-in value. Google is reportedly developing a new trade-in mode for Android designed to speed up ratings and reduce wait times for users.

Why exchanges take time

Exchanges often take time due to the high volume of devices that require thorough inspection. While some phones are quick to evaluate (especially if they’re visibly damaged or won’t turn on), devices in good condition require more attention. Technicians must turn on each phone, go through the setup process, and run diagnostic tests to confirm that everything is working properly.

In addition, as users are advised to factory reset their phones before trading them, technicians must go through the full Android setup wizard before diagnostics can begin. While I can skip most of the screens, repeating these steps for each phone can add up to significant wait times.

What is Trade-In mode?

Trade-In mode is specifically designed to speed things up, allowing technicians to bypass the regular setup wizard and go straight to diagnostics. This mod works by The Android Debugging Bridge (ADB), a tool that developers and technicians use to communicate with Android devices. Normally ADB access is restricted, you need to enable Developer Options, enable USB Debugging and approve the connection before running any diagnostics. But for exchanges, the whole setup process is just extra baggage.

With Trade-In mode, Google allows ADB access right from the first screen of the setup wizard. So instead of tediously going through each phone’s setup, techs can plug it in, run an ADB shortcut, and enter an evaluation mode for diagnostics. In the long run, this could significantly reduce the wait time for trade-in valuations, so you get your trade-in value faster.

Mishaal Rahman has detailed essentially very good, so I would suggest reading his piece if you want to go deeper.

Keeping your data safe

But what about your data? Rest assured that Google has a plan. Because ADB is a powerful tool, Google limits the commands technicians can use in Trade-In mode to essential diagnostics only. So even though technicians can access the system to test hardware and functionality, they won’t be able to see your personal files or anything else sensitive. Additionally, once the inspection is complete, the device is forced to factory reset on the next reboot to keep everything safe.

When can we expect the exchange mode?

Although it is confirmed that Google is working on the Trade-In mode, the timing of its release is still unclear. Rahman suggests that it could be included in the Android 16but it could also come as a standalone update. Anyway, this is all backend stuff for the techs handling the exchanges, so you won’t notice any visual changes. But the impact? You will definitely feel that. Faster changes, faster payments and more confidence than your data ensure? It’s a win-win.
