Man arrested after multiple high-speed chases

SF. LANDRY PARISH — A man was arrested Tuesday, Nov. 11, in connection with a high-speed chase through Opelousas.

On Tuesday afternoon, officers with the Opelousas Police Department saw a vehicle near Julia and Marie streets with an improperly displayed license plate. Officers attempted to pull the driver over, but the driver refused and began a high-speed chase, driving the wrong way on a one-way road.

Out of concern for public safety, officers decided to end the pursuit.

The vehicle was later spotted outside the city by another police officer.

The driver was arrested and identified as Christopher Ron Smith, Jr.

Officers discovered that Smith’s two young children were also in the car during the pursuit.

Police say Smith was involved in a pursuit a week before it ended due to concern for public safety.

Smith was booked into the St. Landry on charges that include aggravated flight from an officer, improper display of license plate, child endangerment and an outstanding bench warrant for aggravated flight from an officer.
