Kenosha teenager remains in custody after school shooting threat

KENOSHA — The 13-year-old boy police say made school shooting threats at Roosevelt Elementary School last week appeared in court via Zoom on Tuesday.

The teenager will remain in custody as the investigation continues. He is not named or identified because he is a minor.

“I think it’s good that he’s in custody. I think he needs to stay there,” said Kenosha parent Daniel McBride.

Kenosha parents like McBride breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday knowing the teenager accused of making terroristic threats last week will remain in custody.

“Obviously, the kid needs help,” McBride said.

Investigators say the teenager tried to enter Roosevelt Elementary on Thursday. Police initially believed he was armed. However, a search of his home turned up an array of realistic-looking airsoft guns.

“It was a very horrendous crime, not just done on a whim, but actually practiced,” Kenosha County Assistant District Attorney Trisha Riley said.

Police said the teenager researched school shootings, looked up maps of the school and filmed himself practicing with what appeared to be a gun.

“The practice on the video, what was on the video and what we see online on the Internet has nothing to do with this event,” defense attorney Terry Rose told the court.

Rose requested a competency exam for the teenager, which was ordered by the court.

“I think this is a kid crying out for help or maybe just attention in general. Because if he really wanted to hurt people, I don’t think it would have been an airsoft gun,” McBride said.

The 13-year-old is due back in court on November 22.
