‘I could have died’: Darnell Henry claims he was shot after criticizing dog in Strawberry Mansion, Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A Philadelphia man is speaking out after he says he was shot for criticizing another man’s dog earlier this month.

“I’m like, ‘Whoa, did you shoot me?'” Darnell Henry recalled.

Henry told Action News what happened before the incident on the morning of November 3rd.

He says he was outside watching TV on the sidewalk near his West Oakdale Street home in Strawberry Mansion.

Henry said his dog Bella walked up to Paul Sanders, 56, who was walking his own dog at the time.

He said Sanders didn’t want the dog near him, and Henry noted that the man’s dog seemed weak.

Minutes later, Henry said Sanders returned with 20-year-old Tanon Fitzpatrick and was shot. He thinks it was because he called Sanders’ dog weak.

“I’m madder than anything. About a dog?” Henry said. “This is nothing but talking about his dog. Feed your dog and go, and I get a bullet for it?”

After the shooting, police said Sanders and Fitzpatrick barricaded themselves inside a home on North 23rd Street.

The SWAT team was called in and the two were arrested, according to police. They now face multiple charges, including aggravated assault.

“It’s upsetting, man. It’s really upsetting. I could have died right there, like I could have died from a dog,” Henry said.

Henry says he spent five days in hospital and is now waiting for the police to question him about what happened.

“This is not the City of Brotherly Love,” Henry said.

Both suspects remain in jail. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Philadelphia Police.
