ROCKAWAY BEACH, Ore. — A rare one tornado swept through a rib Oregon city ​​Monday night, leaving one person injured and a trail of damage in his wake.

The twister began as a waterspout over the nearby Pacific Ocean Rockaway Beachbut then chased ashore and cut over several blocks.

Office of the National Meteorological Service in Portland they reported in their survey that one person suffered minor injuries.

“I haven’t heard of any significant injuries, but there is a lot of property damage,” Tillamook County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Ahlers said in a post on the department’s Facebook page. “Buildings in the Neah-Kah-Nie School District were hit hard, although there does not appear to be any impact on school operations.”

Damage included broken windows at the school building, downed trees and some collapsed outbuildings.

The NWS storm research team determined that the tornado only rated an EF-0 on Improved Fujita scale— the lowest rung on the ladder.

Estimated peak wind speeds were 85 mph, with the tornado lasting just a quarter of a mile over a two-minute stretch.

Oregon averages only a few tornadoes in the state per year; the vast majority of them are rated EF-0. Tuesday’s tornado is only the fifth reported since records began in 1950 reporting a tornado-related injury.

The Oregon coast is under a minor risk of severe weather and possible flash flooding again Wednesday from a powerful Pacific storm.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has the coast at level 1 of 5 severe weather threats, indicating some STORM could generate isolated water thrombi in addition to small hail and gusts of strong gusts of wind.
