HELENA — A man’s friends and family killed in an officer-involved shooting organized a peaceful rally in Helena.

Investigators have not officially released the identity of the man who was shot.

However, according to longtime friend Andrea Cross Guns, Paul Rolfes was fatally shot by law enforcement officers at The Jesters Bar on Saturday, November 2, 2024.

Police say while they were speaking with Rolfes, he held a knife at the officers.

Officers first used non-lethal force, attempting to subdue Rolfes with a taser.

But after he was subdued, police say he stabbed one of the officers, at which point officers shot and killed Rolfes.

The ally began on the lawn of the Montana State Capitol Building.

It then continued to the Center for Law and Justice, the home of Gov. Greg Gianforte and The Jesters Bar, where friends and family of Rolfes left memorials, including flowers and pictures.

Cross Guns says the gathering was meant to draw attention to how mental health crises are handled and share the need for more mental health resources in Montana.

“I see no reason why eight shots should be fired at him. I’m certainly not trying to downplay the fact that an officer was injured and we’re very glad he’s OK, but Paul is not OK. Paul is dead. , and that’s a forever sentence,” Cross Guns said.

It is very important to remember that this is an ongoing investigation.

We reached out to the Helena Police Department and the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office, but both said they could not speak due to the investigation.
