Suspect fired shots during police chase in central Alabama, roadblock, ALEA says

A Montgomery County man is under arrest after authorities say he fired at law enforcement during a standoff in central Alabama.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m. Monday, an ALEA trooper attempted to pull over a 2020 Dodge Ram pickup truck on US 231 near County Road 7707 in Pike County. The driver did not stop and a pursuit ensued.

The pursuit ended when the driver crashed on Alabama 94 in Montgomery County.

Following the impact, there was a conflict between the driver and the law enforcement officers.

ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation, SWAT Team and Hostage Negotiation Unit responded, as did Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies.

Maxie Doyal Evans, 47, of Ramer, was armed with a gun and fired at officers, said Lt. ALEA Jeremy Burkett. No one was injured. After negotiations, Burkett said Evans was taken into custody without further incident.

Evans was taken to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery for treatment.

He faces attempted eluding charges as well as weapons charges, Burkett said. Evans will be booked into the Pike County Jail once he is released from the hospital.
