Election support, more climate coverage: PD letters

Democratic readers in the press comment on Trump’s victory and more.

The elections are upon us

EDITOR: The upside of Donald Trump’s victory is that interlocutors will not launch an attack on the Capitol, defecate in the building, injure over 140 law enforcement officers and cause $1.5 million in property damage.. Additionally, Trump has said he will pardon those convicted of their involvement in the insurgency, eliminating the cost to taxpayers of continued incarceration, so there’s that. Finally, instead of complaining about a “stolen election”, Kamala Harris had the decency to call to congratulate him and will certify the election results as required by our Constitution, thereby facilitating the peaceful transfer of power that is a stone foundation of our country. .

More weather coverage

EDITOR: Why aren’t we seeing more of the disastrous climate crisis in the media? I keep hearing that this is the new norm. That’s the best he’s going to get. The threat of storms like Helene and Milton were predicted by scientists years ago. The British media is doing much more to publicize and report the crisis we are facing. Every night on the news, the weather forecast gets worse, yet only small segments of the problem are published in our papers or mentioned on the news stations. If we continue to pump toxic fumes from fossil fuels into the atmosphere, the situation will get progressively worse. Get real and do a better job of covering the cause of these catastrophic weather disasters please.

Pending trial

EDITOR: On May 16, 2025, I will be tried and face over five years in prison for saving Poppy, Ivy, Aster and Azalea from Perdue’s Petaluma Poultry slaughterhouse. Because I took them to look after, I was arrested on a felony charge. I have been wearing a GPS ankle monitor for more than 300 days while awaiting trial.

Most criminal defense strategies try to get the jury to question whether the defendant actually did what he is accused of doing. I will proudly testify and say that I did. I entered the slaughterhouse, rescued four chickens from a transport cage and left. I treated their wounds and shared their stories publicly.

I will tell the jury exactly what happened. It will be up to them to decide if they think what I did was a crime. I am at peace with whatever may come because I know that Poppy, Ivy, Aster and Azalea are safe, happy and free. I sincerely hope that one day soon, Perdue will be brought to justice for what I believe to be egregious animal crimes.

Changed forever

EDITOR: Here we are, just days after an election that will forever change the face of democracy in America. Twice this century, the popular vote has been defeated by the constitutional peculiarity of the Electoral College. Now the popular vote has been cast and a convicted felon, serial marital cheater, serial bankrupt and sexual predator has been elected by a slim margin of 5 million, or 3.6% of the votes cast. If ever there was an argument for college education, look at this number: 63% of those without college voted for the winning candidate. The American experiment praised by George Washington seems to have failed. We are divided beyond anything imaginable. Our striving for “a more perfect union” seems to have been a dream that will never come true.

The Orwellian result

EDITOR: George Orwell’s masterpiece “1984” seems to have come to life in 2024. The MAGA propaganda and disinformation machine has mastered the art of Newspeak and Doublethink. The election results tell us that most voters have fallen for the constant repetition of conspiracy theories and bogus claims about stolen elections, voting irregularities, immigrant crime rates, a failing economy, late-term abortions, the deep state, and enemies from within. The incessant lying, truth-spinning, branding and name-calling produced their desired effect – a manipulated reality where a desperate nation could only be saved by voting in the ultra-stable genius Donald Trump. God help us all.
