35 dead as ram drivers pile up at sports center in southern China

A driver killed 35 people and injured 43 others when he deliberately rammed his car into a crowd exercising at a sports center in southern China on Monday, police said.

Officers detained a 62-year-old man at the Zhuhai sports center following the incident, which happened on the eve of the country’s first aviation exhibition by the People’s Liberation Army, which is hosted annually in the city.

One of the four hospitals that received victims said it had more than 20 wounded, state media reported.

Officers identified the man only by his surname Fan, in line with Chinese authorities’ practice. The police statement said the vehicle hit “a number” of pedestrians on Monday night.

The driver was found in the car with a knife, with wounds to the neck believed to be self-inflicted, according to the release. He was reported unconscious and receiving medical attention.

He was unhappy with the division of financial assets during his divorce, according to a preliminary investigation, police said.

Videos showed a firefighter performing CPR on a victim as people were told to leave the scene.

These were shared by news blogger and dissident Li Ying, who is better known on X as Teacher Li. His account posts daily news based on user submissions.

Footage showed dozens of people lying on the sports center’s running track, with a woman in one saying: “My leg is broken.”

By Tuesday morning, searches of the incident on Chinese social media were heavily censored on Chinese social media platforms.

A search of the sports center’s Weibo turned up only a few posts, only a few referring to the fact that something had happened, with no pictures or details.

Chinese media articles about Monday night’s incident have been removed.

Chinese internet censors take great care to check social media before and during major events, such as the meeting of the National People’s Congress, where the government announces its major policy initiatives for the coming year.

Xiangzhou City District Sports Center regularly attracts hundreds of residents, where they can run on the athletic field, play football and participate in social dances. Following the incident, the center announced that it would be closed until further notice.

China has seen a series of attacks in which suspects appear to target random people, such as schoolchildren.

In October, a 50-year-old man was detained after allegedly using a knife to attack children at a school in Beijing. Five people were injured.

In September, three people were killed in a knife attack at a supermarket in Shanghai.
