In an age where strangers are relentlessly cruel to each other online, it’s never felt more important to teach the next generation about the power of kind words. That is why kindness is in the foreground Vogue Williams‘ parenting style.

The My therapist ghosted me podcast host, who shares children Theodore, six, Gigi, four, and Otto, two, with the ex Made in Chelsea star Spencer Matthewsshe makes sure to raise her children to include small acts of kindness in their daily lives.

In honor of World Day of KindnessVogue, who is the face of Fairy Non Bio’s #LoadsofKindness campaign, sat down with HELLO! to talk about all kind things, which she firmly believes, starts at home.

You have a wonderful family. How do you show them kindness?

I always try to teach my children manners, to be polite and talk to our neighbors. I tell them to make sure they stop and just say “Hello” or “How are you?” or ‘How was your day?’

Seeing them after school, just little things like that. Because I think I make such a difference just by being polite and respectful. It can make someone’s day, and it’s great when someone shows you that they’re actually interested in what you did today.

In what ways do you instill kindness in your children?

Something we’re trying to focus on now is trying to get them to always say hello – stop and look people in the eye and say hello. Ask them how they are.

Theodore, my oldest, is actually very good. Mum might come back from Spain and he’ll sit down and talk and be really interested in what she’s saying. He is generally very kind. It’s such a big deal and in their school, they get stickers for when they’ve done an act of kindness. This is like the grown-up version of showing your act of kindness, it’s really cute.

How do you show kindness to your spouse and how does he show it back?

I usually cook him something (nice) or do most of the organizing in our lives. I think everyone thinks he and I work together all the time. Actually, no; we are apart most of the day. So at night, we come home, have dinner together, and then we both have our set jobs to make each other’s lives easier.

When I was working the red carpet at Pride of Britain AwardsI came home afterwards and Spenny had cooked for me. I was absolutely starving. He texted me at six. He said, “I’m going to put it on now, because I know you’ll be home by seven,” and I thought it was very nice.

Celebrities are often subjected to cruel and nasty comments. Would you like people to be more considerate and kind?

When someone is a little rude to you, I take it for granted that they’re just having a bad day, and I liken it to people who are constantly trolling others online. I look at them and think, “God, you must be really unhappy in your own life.” What brings you happiness is destroying others. I feel sorry for them in a way. And once you get to that point and realize it’s not you, it’s them. Whatever you put out comes back to you. I really believe that and I’m not (in manifestation) or anything like that. If you take away positivity and happiness, that’s what you’ll get back. Even for that selfish reason, you should put kindness in there, because it’s so much better for everyone. The random act of kindness as part of this Fairy Non Bio #LoadsofKindness campaign is so sweet. It makes you feel good to know that you were actually a decent person that day.

Are you kind to yourself and if so how?

Oh, I’d say I’m definitely kind to myself. I have time to sit down and tell me, I spend an hour reading my book.

Just making sure I get some alone time because I’m really busy all the time and it’s really nice to sit down and pay attention and give yourself some time. Grab that nice chocolate bar, drink your cup of tea and be alone. This is so important. I just want to be alone for like two minutes!

Who is the best person you know?

Spenny has a sister, Nina, and she is so kind. She is one of those people. His mother is also incredibly kind. Spenny’s mother is so selfless and so is his sister. They will go out of their way to make sure everyone else is taken care of. Let’s say it’s my birthday; his mom will come over with a cake so the kids can blow out the candles and bring me something really thoughtful.

Are people nice to you?

I generally find that I surround myself with really nice people. My family is great. My friends are great. I choose to work with wonderful people. When you work with people who are kind not only to me, but also to my team, like my management, it means a lot to me.
