Matric exams: Here’s what’s to be written this week and study hacks

IEB and NSC Matric Exam Syllabus Week 4.

In less than three weeks, matrics will finally put down their pens as the 2024 exams come to an end.

Learners started their exams on 21 October and will end on 28 November for National Senior Certificate (NSC) and Independent Examinations Board (IEB) learners.

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has revealed that 727,121 full-time candidates and 155,215 part-time candidates will sit for the 2024 matric examinations across the country.

“That’s 882,336 candidates from all over South Africa,” she said, adding that 16 400 IEB students will sit the exams.

NSC exam schedule

The fourth week of exams starts with Physical Science (chemistry) and Technical Science Paper 2 on Monday morning and dance studies in the afternoon at 2pm.

On Tuesday, matric students will write the following languages; isiZulu, isiXhosa, siSwati and isiNdebele Papers 2. Home Languages ​​(HL) and First Additional Languages ​​(FAL) will be written in less than two and a half hours and Second Additional Language (SAL) in less than one hour and half.

Later in the day, students will write Economics Paper 1 at 2pm.

Midweek candidates will sit English HL, FAL and SAL Paper 2 in the first session and Engineering Graphics and Design P2 in the second session.

Accounting Paper 1 will be written on Thursday morning and Tourism in the afternoon.

The week will end with students taking part in Life Sciences paper 1 at 9:00am and Civil Technology at 2:00pm.

IEB exam schedule

For IEB students, the week starts with the history paper 2 in the morning, with no exams in the afternoon.

Matrics will write Life Science Paper 1 on Tuesday at 9:00am.

On Wednesday, candidates will attend Graphic Engineering and Design 1 papers in the morning.

Dramatic Arts will be written on Thursday morning, with no exam scheduled in the second session.

Finally, for the week matrics will write both Maths Literacy Paper 2 and Physical Science (Chemistry) Paper 2 in the first session.

Study Hacks

  • Use the Pomodoro Technique: Study in concentrated bursts of 25 minutes, followed by a five-minute break.
  • Create a cheat sheet with key terms and concepts. It is also advantageous to use the single-paper style as a cheat sheet. The single paper method refers to writing everything you have studied on a single paper, from your memory. This method tricks your brain into taking in a lot of information faster and shorter than you normally would.
  • Use music to your advantage: Listen to instrumental music or white noise to improve concentration. Spotify, YouTube and or Apple Music usually have study playlists of the sounds mentioned above.
  • Take breaks to move your body and refresh your mind.
  • Use visual aids such as charts, flow charts and infographics to simplify the complex
