Good Samaritan hero moment falls off the hood of a car and breaks 15 ribs after hanging on for nearly half a mile trying to stop pickpockets from fleeing

This is the moment a hero falls off the hood of a car after hanging on for almost half a mile to try and stop a pickpocket in a getaway car.

Stuart Fox sprang into action after seeing drug addict Keith Wilcox grab a woman’s bag and jump into a Vauxhall Corsa driven by Lisa Burgess.

Shocking footage shows him clutching the bonnet as it speeds away from the car park of a Morrison in Castleford, West Yorkshire and onto a main road.

Burgess had driven for more than a third of a mile before Mr Fox was finally thrown from the car, suffering 15 broken ribs.

The pair then sped away and Burgess was later caught on CCTV trying to use the stolen bank card to buy vodka but the card was declined.

Leeds Crown Court heard that Wilcox and Burgess were on bail at the time of the offense for a previous shoplifting offence, just days before the robbery.

They tampered with Burgess’ license plate and drove to Morrison’s with the intention of shoplifting on September 1.

But when they got there, Wilcox approached Sharon Corban and asked her to take a photo before grabbing her purse and jumping into the Corsa, shouting “go, go, go”.

Bystander Mr Fox tried to drag Burgess out of the car but she backed out of his way.

He then jumped on the windscreen in an attempt to stop her escaping, but she sped away while he stayed.

Wilcox, 41, was jailed for 20 months today (Tuesday, September 12) after previously pleading guilty to robbery.

Burgess, 44, was jailed for a total of three years after pleading guilty to robbery, fraud by false representation and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Prosecutor Jennifer Gatland told the court: “Sharon Corban was crossing Morrison’s car park when she was approached by Wilcox who grabbed her arm.

“She asked him if he was okay, he asked if he could take a picture and reached into her purse.

“He then jumped into a black Corsa driven by Burgess, shouting ‘go, go, go’.

“Stuart Fox tried to jump into the driver’s door to pull him out. But he missed and Burgess reversed the vehicle to escape.

— Mr Fox then jumped onto the windscreen but Burgess continued to drive.

“Burgess drove about a third of a mile before he suddenly jerked and Mr. Fox fell out of the car and hit his head.”

Ms Gatland said Mr Fox was rushed to nearby Pinderfields Hospital where he was treated for broken ribs and injuries to the front, top and back of his head.

He was discharged the next day after being treated with intravenous drugs.

About an hour later, Wilcox was caught on CCTV trying to use the stolen bank card in a shop but was refused.

The two were arrested later that day when police saw Burgess driving the car with Wilcox in the passenger seat.

In her victim impact statement, which Ms Gatland read to the court, Ms Corban said she had been hurt and traumatized by the robbery.

She said: “I have nightmares, waking up screaming, reliving the robbery.

“I keep seeing the man who tried to help me on the hood.” I wake up screaming and wake up my husband saying “he’s dying, I killed him because I asked him to help me”.

She said Wilcox pushed her back while grabbing her purse, leaving her with back pain that prevents her from participating in social activities.

It also left her too traumatized to work in her daughter’s estate agents in Leeds because there are too many people.

She added: ‘I don’t want to go out alone. I think I will be robbed or attacked again.

“I refuse social events because of back pain.”

Kara Firth, defending Burgess, said he was a law-abiding citizen before he met Wilcox – a crack addict with 14 previous convictions – on Tinder.

She said the mother of two lost her family home and the children – aged 12 and 17 – were forced to stay with relatives.

Wilcox, who appeared on video link from New Hall Prison, wept as Mrs Frith said: “She is mortified by what she has done. She is disgusted by her behavior.

“She continued to use the stolen card in the robbery. This was particularly painful as it had left a man injured on the road.

“She is horrified that she has sunk to those depths and is desperate to apologize to those she has upset and hurt.”

Judge Mushtaq Khokhar sentenced Burgess to two years in prison for causing grievous bodily harm by dangerous driving and one year for her role in the robbery, to be served consecutively.

She will also serve a concurrent three-month sentence for fraud and will be banned from driving for 48 months.

He said: “I saw the CCTV of Burgess speeding and Mr Fox being thrown from the car.

“There is a red car driven immediately behind the car driven by Mrs Burgess. Mr. Fox is thrown into the path, but fortunately stops.

“The consequences are unbearable to think about. It would have been fatal at worst and life changing at best.

Constable Natalie Carr, from Wakefield’s crime squad, said: “The male victim showed immense courage in standing up to something he knew was wrong.

“We all have a role to play in tackling violence against women and girls and I know how grateful the female victim of the robbery is for his actions.

“Burgess put this man in extreme danger by continuing to speed knowing he was holding on to the vehicle.

“Even knowing she had left a man injured on the road, this did not deter her from trying to use a bank card which was stolen during the robbery a short time later.

“Both Wilcox and Burgess are now behind bars for their actions.”
