Injury clouds QB picture for Huskers and their new Play-Caller ahead of USC game

Nebraska football has a new offensive coordinator and a question mark at quarterback as the Huskers prepare for a road trip to face the USC Trojans in Los Angeles.

Head coach Matt Rhule announced the change in offensive lineman duties during Monday’s press conference. News that Holgorsen had joined the staff broke last week, but it wasn’t known until Monday that he was replacing Marcus Satterfield as offensive coordinator.

Raiola left the Nov. 2 UCLA game during the fourth quarter with a back injury. The Huskers were inactive last week, giving the freshman extra time to recuperate. Junior QB Heinrich Haarberg will start if Raiola is unavailable.

of Kaleb Henry video and notes from Rhule’s press conference, plus coverage from additional sources, are below.

  • Dylan Raiola will try to train on Tuesday, but will prepare Heinrich Haarberg for the start.
  • Dana Holgorsen will call games this week and will be the CO for the rest of the season.
  • “One of the great offensive minds” Rhule trusts.
  • “Unique” to get someone in November and start calling plays, but it’s “necessary”.
  • “I want to score points,” but that doesn’t necessarily represent a change in Rhule’s attacking philosophy.
  • “Just worried at this point” when asked where that leaves Marcus Satterfield next.
  • I have to find the things that guys do well and just do them.
  • Holgorsen does not come to install the air raid for the last three games.
  • We haven’t had a lot of conversations with the players about the changes.
  • The seniors got a few days off during the bye week as the younger guys got more reps.
  • “Players have to go make plays.”
  • Phil Snow basically consulted, unlike Holgorsen who came in person and now as OC.
  • I called them both the Sunday night after the UCLA loss to ask them to consult. He had the idea of Holgorsen becoming OC, but wanted to feel comfortable in person.
  • You have some good young players with games left to use and keep the redshirts, but don’t expect the team to look drastically different over the last three games.
  • Rhule says he didn’t streamline everything as well as he should have as a head coach, which has failed Satterfield and others thus far.
  • You do 95% of things right, but you just need to fix those few things to get over the hump.
  • “Maybe we throw it too much, maybe we don’t throw it enough.”
  • Heinrich Haarberg is “the best kind of team”.
  • HH has played the punt unit the last two weeks, but brings a lot to the table if he gets the nod.
  • Do a lot of scouting for the USC QB situation and what it means for their offense.
  • I thought the team was excellent last night, but it needs them to get to the point where the mentality is not so reactive to the circumstances.
  • “I made this move that I made and I’m going to make any other move that I need to make,” but players also need to make the moves to get better.
  • I have to play better football and coach better football.
  • Husker fans on the road make an impact. “Make it fun to be on the road.”
