Man arrested after bringing gun to two Murfreesboro elementary schools

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A Murfreesboro man was arrested after allegedly bringing a gun into two Murfreesboro elementary schools Monday.

The Murfreesboro Police Department said no students or staff are in danger.

Police arrested Austin Diller, 22, at his home on two warrants for possession of a firearm on school property.

Diller reportedly went to the John Pittard Elementary School campus just before 11:30 a.m. seeking information about a younger sibling’s enrollment. Diller then went to Erma Siegel Elementary School looking for the same information. According to police, he was told he could find the registration information online.

When Diller turned to leave, office staff observed on the external camera that he was openly carrying a gun in a holster, officials said.

A school resource officer at one of the schools was notified. Diller left before the SRO got to him.

Police said that because Diller’s location was unknown after leaving the school, all MCS schools and nearby private schools were placed on light lockdown as a precaution. The Murfreesboro Police Department said a light lockdown means no visitors are allowed in the schools or students outside.

Police tracked down Diller with the help of crime data analysts from MPD’s Real Time Crime Center using license plate cameras.

Diller was booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on $5,000 bond.

“He is scheduled to appear in Rutherford County General Sessions Court on December 16,” police said.
