A DEADLY house fire that killed a man and a woman was sparked by an exploding e-bike battery, police say.

Firefighters rushed to the first-floor flat in Stoke Aldermoor, Coventry, at around 4.40am on Friday and spent more than an hour battling the inferno.

Two people were tragically found dead inside the property The Coventry Telegraph reports.

West Midlands Police said investigators determined the “accidental” fire was started by the battery of an e-bike being charged in a hallway.

They said in a statement today: “We are working alongside West Midlands Fire Service to investigate the fire at The Coppice on Friday (November 8).

“Investigators have now confirmed that the cause of the fire was accidental and was caused by the battery of an e-bike being charged.

“Our thoughts remain with the man and woman who died and we will now both be assisting the coroner with their enquiries.”

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: “No further information will be released at this time regarding the cause or the victims who lost their lives in this tragic accident. Our thoughts remain with all those affected by this tragic accident.”
