The 4G connected anti-theft system protects this cargo ebike when parked

California-based Aventon entered the world of utility bikes last year with Cargo ebikes abound. Now, the company has added a short-tail version that comes with an all-new smart system for quiet security as well as improved connectivity.

“Whether you’re running errands, dropping off the kids, or hauling groceries, Abound SR makes commuting and freighting effortless and enjoyable,” the company said. “Packed with performance, comfort and safety features, it offers the perfect solution for those who need a bike that can do it all.”

The 750 W rear hub motor is a 750 W motor for 80 Nm (59 lb.ft) of torque and a top speed of 20 mph (32 km/h). – although it can be unlocked at 25mph via a companion app. This is a class 2 e-bike, so you also get a throttle for assisted take off, which is a welcome addition for a cargo bike. And there’s a torque sensor in the bottom bracket for more natural motor response.

The SR’s electronics get their juice from a removable 708 Wh battery made up of LG 21700 cells, with Aventon promising up to 60 miles (96.5 km) of range per charge. An 8-speed Shimano Altus gear set also offers more riding flexibility, which will be appreciated when tackling a daunting incline.

The Abound SR can be optioned with a host of accessories, including a padded seat and footpegs for sharing the bike with a friend.

The new freighter is the first outing for the Aventon’s new control unit, which includes anti-theft technology such as 4G connectivity, GPS tracking, geofencing and remote lock/shutdown. When the e-bike is turned off and locked, a user will need to enter a password to restart it. The bike comes with a built-in audio and visual alarm system so that bystanders know that an opportunist is trying to get away with your ride. The system also allows riders to adjust the ebike’s three levels of pedal assist, torque and pedal response, and also provides real-time bike stats.

The SR has a newly designed color handlebar display for access to the bike’s features without having to take one hand off the BMX-style bars. Bluetooth connectivity is also baked in, plus a USB-C charging port for charging your mobile while you’re on the go.

The utility bike is built around a 6061 aluminum frame with low chainrings and tips the scales at 80 lb (36.3 kg). It features a rear rack and mesh wheel guard to keep your feet or bags away from the rear wheel and offers a payload capacity of 440lb (~200kg).

Absorbing inevitable bumps along the road is the job of a suspension seatpost with 50mm of travel, although there is also a suspension fork. The bike rides on 20-inch wheels wearing 3-inch urban tires with reflective sidewalls, and reliable stopping power comes with Tektro hydraulic disc brakes with a 180mm front and 203mm rear rotor.

Completing the key specifications, an integrated headlamp and tail brake lamp with turn signals help visibility day or night in traffic. Wings are also included, along with a two-legged stand that can be locked remotely.

The Abound SR multitasker is UL 2849 and UL 2271 safety certified and is available now in three color options for a suggested retail price of $2,199. Optional accessories include padded seats, foot pegs, a front rack and a two-seater child trailer.
