Credit card readers in Israeli stores crash following DDoS cyber attack

Thousands of credit card readers at Israeli gas stations and supermarket chains malfunctioned on Sunday morning in what the company responsible for the readers’ cyber security called a suspected DDoS attack.

Hyp Credit Guard told Israeli media outlets on Sunday that it ruled out fears of a larger scale. cyber attackadding that a suspected denial-of-service attack on communications providers is the likely cause of the outage in Israeli stores.

The company had since reported that the attack had ended after an hour-long crash.

“Over the past hour, we have experienced a DDoS attack on some of the company’s services and communications providers connected to us,” Credit Guard said in a statement.

“At this time, the attack has been blocked and the service has returned to normal operation. We are coordinating with all security agencies to ensure normal operations continue.”

Iranian cyber attacks on Israeli civilian systems continue

This suspected cyber attack follows previous attempts by Iran to penetrate Israeli cyber defenses. In October, a similar attack targeted the national credit-based payment system.

The attack on the system, operated by Sheba (Automated Banking Services)caused delays in approving debit card payments. However, Sheba reported that its core role in the national payments system remained intact, preventing widespread market impact.
