England’s number one county revealed with the ‘best’ of Britain’s natural wonders | Travel News | Travel

In all 48 counties of England, you are sure to find things that make each of them unique. But which one is the best?

The counties were measured on 41 indicators, from the number of golf courses to the crime rate, and these tough criteria revealed England’s best county.

Ranked number one, named the best county in England telegraphis the wonderful county of Devon in south-west England – apparently home to Britain’s best natural wonders, rivaling the best in the world.

Destination expert Suzy Bennett said: “Food in Devon is simple, healthy and old fashioned. A trip here combines two of life’s greatest pleasures: delicious food and the great outdoors.”

Devon came out on top, creating a huge gap of 61 points between second-placed county Cumbria. But what earned Devon first place?

Most of it has to do with the fact that the county is multipurpose – the place has everything. From great restaurants to beautiful scenery, you won’t be disappointed.

In the county, you’ll find two national parks and five national landscapes, which earned it a whopping 110 points. Dartmoor National Park has been named a ‘holiday centre’ for Devon, which is 9.9% covered in trees, according to the Ordnance Survey.

With 14 beaches along a 495km coastline, nine RSPB reserves, an RHS garden and a variety of woodlands, it’s no surprise that Devon kills it in the natural wonders category.

The county also has 177 museums and galleries to explore and 13 English Heritage properties, making Devon a county rich in history and culture.

In addition, it is also home to five Michelin-starred restaurants and the Endsleigh Hotel in Tavistock, which is one of the top 50 hotels in the world, according to Telegraph Travel. What beats good food and a good place to sleep?
