What to do if you are caught in a robbery in a mall

With the holiday season approaching, festive Christmas decorations have appeared in most malls across the country and people are starting to think about their festive shopping.

Every year, the number of malls goes up as December approaches, and in addition to being a fun and festive time, it can also mean an increase in mall thefts and robberies. It’s important to stay safe during the festive shopping season, so stay alert and don’t get distracted by all the hype and excitement.

Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing & Communications for Fidelity Services Group, advises: “The most important thing in a robbery is to stay calm. Staying alert and following some key safety guidelines can help protect you and those around you.”

Fidelity offers the following essential safety tips:

If you are in the looted store:

  • Cooperate with thieves for your own safety. Listen carefully and follow their instructions.
  • Stay as calm as possible. While everyone reacts differently, try to breathe deeply and stay calm until help arrives.
  • Avoid using your cell phone during the robbery, as this can agitate the attackers.
  • Find a sheltered spot and stay low to the ground to avoid attracting attention.
  • Take mental notes of the attackers to report to the authorities later – details such as clothing, distinguishing markings, jewellery, height and body can be very useful.
  • Keep your children close at all times. Don’t let them get lost while you shop.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or valuables.

If you are not in the looted store:

  • Ask store staff to close the blinds if possible and move to the back of the store out of sight. Many malls have this as standard operating procedure.
  • Quickly find a store near you and secure as described above.
  • Avoid main entrances and exits as they can be used by thieves. Many malls have emergency lockout procedures.

Hattingh adds: “Criminal activity has become increasingly sophisticated, often involving inside information. Whether directly involved in a robbery or just a witness, seeking counseling can be crucial in managing potential post-traumatic stress.”

Stay alert this festive season and remember these simple safety tips to protect yourself and your loved ones.
