Hawaii County Fire Chief Discusses Fire Prevention Education

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii County Fire Chief Kazuo Todd joined HNN Sunrise on Saturday to talk about his office’s efforts to educate residents about the importance of fire safety and wildfire prevention.

As chairman of the Hawaii State Fire Marshal’s Board, he is also working to revitalize the State Fire Marshal’s Office, boosted by new support in the wake of the Lahaina disaster.

On Friday, HECO released details of its wildfire mitigation plan, including efforts to work with property owners to trim vegetation and raise awareness about its Public Safety Power Shutdown Program, or PSPS. The program aims to preemptively shut down power to customers in high-risk, high-wind areas when they face a threat.

Todd said he talks to groups about knowing what a Red Flag Day is and how to prepare for a wildfire.
