CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – A North Carolina man will spend over a decade behind bars after pleading guilty to an assault in Horry County in 2021.

The 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office said Jason Willets, 39, of Whiteville, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault and battery. Willets was due to appear in court this week.

Prosecutors said the charge was related to a 2021 assault at J. Reuben involving a detention officer. Officials said Willets admitted during a hearing that he picked up a chair and threw it toward an office area inside the cell block.

The chair then hit the officer in the head and injured her, causing her to receive hospital treatment.

A judge sentenced Willets to 15 years in prison after his plea.
