Antioch police are negotiating the man’s surrender after an 8-hour standoff

ANTIOCH — A nearly eight-hour standoff with a 61-year-old man who was armed with a knife and suspected of domestic violence ended Friday night with the man being taken into custody by Antioch Police Department SWAT team members.

The standoff began after police were called to a home in the 1000 block of Stonecrest Drive around 3:43 p.m. Friday, according to an Antioch police news release. A woman was allegedly assaulted, kidnapped and robbed by the suspect.

When police arrived at the home, they found the 47-year-old woman outside, with her alleged assailant barricaded inside, the press release states. The man was also believed to be armed. Police also learned he had violated the terms of a court order and was wanted on several unrelated warrants for violating probation.

Officers tried to negotiate with the man for several hours, but he refused to come out and surrender, the release said. Instead, he showed officers a large knife. The Antioch Police Department’s SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Teams soon responded and negotiations continued.

During that time, the police asked people to stay away from the areaas they worked to deal with this “limited emergency”.

At 11:46 p.m., the man finally surrendered and SWAT team members took him into custody, the release said. He was transported to the hospital for medical evaluation and later booked into the Contra Costa County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, felony domestic violence, kidnapping, violation of a court order and resisting arrest.
