The Democrats didn’t listen to the people; Trump and the GOP won big

In essence, Donald Trump was right about the Democrats. Their ideas and values did not resonate with voters.

America has freed its future from what it was.

Donald Trump won a second nonconsecutive term in the White House, Republicans have a comfortable majority in the United States Senate, and the House of Representatives is within reach.

Trump and Republicans cast Democrats as out of touch with working-class Americans, and voters largely agreed.

Undoubtedly, up-and-coming progressives will worry about voters rejecting democracy, their refusal to appreciate the dangers of climate change, and Trump’s rise in toxic masculinity. They point out that he will dismiss the cases against him and speculate on who is on the “enemies” list.

If there is enough smoke left in the tank, they will continue to point out that he is a morally suspect man with a foul mouth who says whatever he wants regardless of the truth.

Democrats were defeated by hubris and contempt for other Americans

For years, my Democrat friends have consistently explained to me that I am essentially a low-information voter. If I simply understood the gravity of the political moment, I would agree with them.

Where I come from, that’s called condescension. That is why the Democrats suffered such a significant defeat.

Republicans have focused on the issues that working class America cares most about: the economy, immigration and violent crime.

On the controversial issue of abortion, Republicans countered the attack by saying the issue is best decided at the state level. In contrast, Democrats puts health care and Supreme Court appointments as higher priorities than the economy.

Most voters chose Trump and a Republican-led Senate. This is democracy.

On election night, working class America voted for safe communities based on stable jobs that won’t be taken over by cheap undocumented immigrant labor.

America felt so strongly that Trump was the better choice to meet those core issues that they gave him a majority in the Senate to ensure that political appointees in his administration would almost certainly be confirmed.

Democrats and Trump’s most ardent detractors will spend the next few months explaining to the American people what they should have done instead of learning from what they actually did. Until that changes, Republicans will continue to gain momentum.

In essence, Trump was right about the Democrats. Their ideas and values did not resonate with voters.

Progressives are not the only custodians of American democracy. Now, they are not in charge of the Senate or the White House either.
