Three people indicted in alleged Iran-linked plot to assassinate Trump

Three people have been indicted for their involvement in an Iran-linked effort to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Friday.

Three men have been indicted for their links to an alleged conspiracy to kill a critic of the Iranian regime on US soil and a larger effort to carry out conspiracies against Trump and other enemies of Tehran, conformable to the DOJ. Two suspects – Carlisle Rivera and Jonathon Loadholt, both of New York – have been arrested, while Farhad Shakeri of Iran remains at large and is believed to be in his home country.

“There are few actors in the world that pose as serious a threat to the national security of the United States as Iran,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. “The Justice Department has charged an Iranian regime asset who was tasked by the regime with directing a network of criminal associates to further Iran’s assassination plots against its targets, including President-elect Donald Trump. We also charged and arrested two individuals who we allege were recruited as part of that network to silence and kill, on US soil, an American journalist who was a prominent critic of the regime. We will not tolerate the Iranian regime’s attempts to endanger the American people and America’s national security.”

The DOJ describes Shakeri as a Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) “active” who used the contacts he established in US prison to carry out plots against Iranian regime targets. The IRGC asked Shakeri to devise a plot to assassinate Trump on October 7, although he allegedly did not intend to develop a strategy to do so within the timeframe requested by the IRGC, a department identified by the State Department. Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO).

All three men were hit with murder-for-hire, conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire and money laundering charges, and the Shakers also face charges related to providing support for an FTO, according to the DOJ.

The IRGC agent who allegedly asked Shakeri to devise a plot to kill the president-elect gave Shakeri a week to come up with a plan, saying the IRGC would cease its effort to assassinate Trump after that time frame until after the US election, conformable to the DOJ complaint. The IRGC operative training Shakeri believed Trump would lose the election and, as a result, would be easier to target, the indictment said.

“President-elect Trump is aware of the Iranian terrorist regime’s assassination attempt,” Trump’s communications director, Steven Cheung, said in a statement to the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Nothing will deter President Trump from returning to the White House and restoring peace to the entire world.”

“The charges announced today reveal Iran’s continued deranged attempts to target American citizens, including President-elect Donald Trump, other government leaders and dissidents critical of the Tehran regime,” FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a statement. “The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps—a designated foreign terrorist organization—conspired with criminals and assassins to target and take down Americans on U.S. soil, and it simply will not be tolerated.”

In his first term, Trump and his administration cracked down hard on the Iranian regime with sanctions and by removing the former leader of the IRGC. Qassem Soleimani in 2020. The president-elect has pledged to significantly strengthen America’s stance against the Iranians again in his second term in the White House.
