Every uncalled 2024 election race left in the battle for control of Washington

Former President Donald Trump won a second term in the White House and his Republican Party won control of the Senate. But control of the House of Representatives is still up for grabs, as is the size of the future Senate majority.

In the race for the House, Democrats face an uphill climb to pick up the four seats needed to flip the chamber, while Republicans just need to win a few more competitive races to keep the majority. With more than a dozen House races still uncalled and many looking close, Democrats would need to keep all of their seats competitive and flip a few Republican-held seats to reach the 218 seats needed for a majority.

With votes still being counted, here’s a look at the key races that remain uncalled by the NBC News decision office (read more about what are those races called). While some battlefield states can be designed relatively quickly, it could take days or even weeks to resolve House control.

Presidential battlegrounds

With a Trump victory in Michigan projected by NBC News Wednesday afternoon and a victory in Nevada called for early Thursday morning, only one battleground state remains uncalled.

In the Sun Belt, Trump leads in Arizona, but the state is too close to call.

The races for the Senate have yet to be called

Arizona Senate: Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego leads Republican Kari Lake in the vote count, but the race is still too early to call. Lake is trailing Trump’s margin in the state, while Gallego is ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris. Gallego, a Navy veteran, volunteered his military service in his race against Lake, a former local TV news anchor. Lake ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2022 and made false claims that her 2022 race was affected by voter fraud.

Nevada Senate: Republican Sam Brown, a combat-wounded military veteran, is in a tight race against Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen, who is seeking her second term in the Senate. Nevada has been narrowly divided in recent elections, with Republican Joe Lombardo flipping the Governor’s Mansion in 2022, even as Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto won re-election. But while Democrats had hoped the state abortion referendum could help boost turnout for Democratic candidates, the margin in the race remains extremely tight.

Pennsylvania Senate: While Trump is expected to win Pennsylvania, the Senate race is still too close to call. Democratic Sen. Bob Casey is running for a third term against Republican Dave McCormick, a former hedge fund CEO who ran unsuccessfully for the GOP Senate nomination in 2022.

Home control on the line

House Control is still unclear, with significant competitive races remaining uncalled, including a number of key California-only races. There are also other races that are not expected to be competitive but have not yet been projected because few votes have been counted.

Alaska District At-Large: Republicans are looking to take this statewide seat, which Trump easily carried. Republican Nick Begich leads Democrat Rep. Mary Peltola, but he is floating around the 50% threshold needed to win the race outright. If he doesn’t reach that threshold, the race will head to a ranked-choice vote, but Republicans are confident they’ll still hold the seat in that scenario.

Arizona District 1: Rep. GOP David Schweikert is in a competitive race in suburban Phoenix against Democrat Amish Shah, a former state legislator.

Arizona’s 6th District: Rep. GOP Juan Ciscomani is trailing his Democratic opponent, former state Sen. Kirsten Engel, in this competitive district in suburban Tucson.

California’s 9th District: Democratic Rep. Josh Harder narrowly leads his Republican opponent, Stockton Mayor Kevin Lincoln.

California’s 13th District: Rep. GOP John Duarte is locked in a tight race against Democrat Adam Gray, a former state legislator, in this Central Valley district.

California’s 21st District: Rep. Democrat Jim Costa is locked in a tight race with Republican Michael Maher, a former FBI agent, in this Fresno-area district.

California’s 22nd District: GOP Rep. David Valadao, one of two remaining House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, is leading his Democratic opponent, former state Rep. Rudy Salas.

California’s 27th District: Rep. GOP Mike Garcia is in a tight race against Democrat George Whitesides, former NASA chief of staff and Virgin Galactic CEO, in this Southern California district.

California’s 41st District: Democrats have targeted this Riverside County district, and GOP Rep. Ken Calvert is in a competitive race with Democrat Will Rollins, a former prosecutor.

California’s 45th District: Rep. GOP Michelle Steel leads Democratic Army veteran Derek Tran in one of the most expensive races in the country.

California’s 47th District: Republicans are looking to flip this open seat in Southern California, and Republican Scott Baugh, a former state legislator, is in a competitive race against former state Sen. Dave Min.

California’s 49th District: Also in Southern California, Democratic Rep. Mike Levin is in a tight race against auto dealer Matt Gunderson, a self-described “pro-choice” Republican.

Colorado’s 8th District: Rep. Democrat Yadira Caraveo is locked in a tight race in suburban Denver against Republican state Rep. Gabe Evans.

Iowa District 1: Only a few hundred votes separate Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Democrat Christina Bohannan, a former state representative. It’s familiar territory for Miller-Meeks, who won the 2020 race by just six votes.

Maine District 2: Democratic Rep. Jared Golden has been a top target for the GOP and is just over the 50 percent threshold that would allow him to win outright over Republican state Rep. Austin Theriault, a former NASCAR driver (the state runs ranked-choice elections). .

Ohio’s 9th District: Rep. Democrat Marcy Kaptur is locked in an extremely close race with GOP state Rep. Derek Merrin.

Oregon District 5: Democrat Janelle Bynum fully leads Republican Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer.

Washington District 4: Rep. Republican Dan Newhouse briefly runs former Republican NASCAR driver Jerrod Sessler. (Washington’s mayor promotes the top two vote-getters in the general election, regardless of party.)

Sessler has Trump’s endorsement over Newhouse, who is one of two remaining House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after January 6, 2021, the Capitol uprising.
