Scalise promises House investigation after FEMA official blocks aid for Trump homes in Florida

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) said he would open an investigation into a report that Federal Emergency Management Agency blocked disaster relief from supporters of President-elect Donald Trump.

Scalise’s announcement Thursday night came after Daily Wire reported that a FEMA official ordered employees to “avoid” Florida homes “doing the Trump commercial” after Hurricane Milton hit the state.

“Denying disaster relief to Americans based on their support for President Donald Trump is as disgusting as denying an unelected bureaucrat paid for by American taxpayers,” the top House Republican said in a statement at X

“The House will investigate this outrageous abuse of power,” Scalise continued.

The federal agency confirmed whistleblower reports that FEMA Supervisor Marni Washington told employees it was “best practice” to ignore Trump-supporting homes as they canvassed Florida neighborhoods to determine who needed assistance following the recent Hurricane Milton. FEMA workers jumped at least 20 homes known to have Trump signs or flags under Washington.

FEMA said it was “deeply troubled by the actions of this employee” and maintained that the agency was working to “help(p) all survivors, regardless of their preferences or political affiliation.”

After Washington Examiner pressed FEMA if the agency fired the official who denied help to Trump supporters, it responded: “We have taken steps to remove the employee from their role and are investigating the matter to prevent this from happening again.”

FEMA went on to say that the employee “had no authority” to provide guidance “and was given no direction to tell teams to avoid these homes.”

Reaction from top Florida officials to the revelations was immediate, with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) requesting his own investigation from the Sunshine State’s Division of Emergency Management.

“The blatant government hogging by partisan activists in the federal bureaucracy is yet another reason the Biden-Harris administration is in its final days,” DeSantis said in a post at X

Representatives Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) and Matt Gaetz (R-FL) echoed the governor’s rhetoric as they criticized FEMA for “inadmissible discrimination.

“While people were dying and needing help, a FEMA employee decided that the people who support President Trump are not worth it,” Luna worried in a post at X

Trump criticized FEMA for the agency’s response to help victims after Hurricanes Helene and Milton devastated the Southeast. His concerns had in particular it resonated with hard-hit communities in western North Carolina, where many counties voted overwhelmingly for him on Tuesday, despite FEMA’s protests that allegations of slow disaster response are false.
