School identifies teenager killed in house explosion; The NTSB is now investigating

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – The 15-year-old boy killed in this week’s South Jordan home explosion has been identified by his school as Logan Hansen. Bingham High School shared Hansen’s name in a social media post to announce a vigil scheduled for Friday.

Local fire investigators have determined that a natural gas leak caused Wednesday’s explosion.

The vigil is scheduled to take place at the school starting at 6:30 p.m., with a moment of silence at 7 p.m. Those attending are asked to wear blue.

Also Friday, the National Transportation Safety Board said it was investigating the explosion, but did not provide further details.

The day after the incident, the gravity of what happened in their backyards began to set in for the neighbors.

The raw video below shows the house explosion caught on camera:

“Just horrible devastation,” said neighbor Carol Lee Doramus, who lives a few blocks away from the home.

Doramus said she heard a loud explosion and couldn’t imagine what it was until her daughter told her what happened.

“What strikes you is that the house… doesn’t exist,” she added. “And I looked up there and it looks like a refrigerator up there in the pile. And I can’t imagine losing everything that I have, pictures of my kids, stuff like that.”

A gas leak was determined to be the cause of the fire and explosion in an update from South Jordan Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Lessner.

The source of the leak remains under investigation.

Sami Davis says she worked for the family as a nanny and nanny for nearly a decade.

“My mom called me and said there was a fire or some kind of incident in that neighborhood and I knew the family lived there,” Davis said.

Davis says she and her mother went to where the house was.

“That’s when I realized it was the family home that I knew and that I knew,” Davis said.

Davis told FOX 13 News that the 15-year-old boy who was killed was about two or three years old when he started working for the family.

“When he was little, he was happy and as a pre-teen he was just a normal pre-teen, but also happy,” Davis said. “His personality was that he was always like laughing at things and he was still a kid, no, just like any other kid.”

Neighbors rallied around the boy’s family with blue ribbons tying a fence that now stands in front of where the house once stood.

“I couldn’t imagine that,” said neighbor David Llewellyn. “My heart, our hearts, my wife and I, go to the family.”

As the sun set on Thursday, blue lights could be seen on nearby trees and houses. We were told that blue is the boys’ favorite color.

“We just left a bunch of clothes for all the kids and parents and tried to find things to keep them warm,” Davis said.

For Davis, she touched on what saddens her most about this tragic incident.

“I won’t be able to see milestones like that as he grows and gets older,” Davis said. “It also makes me sad for his family who won’t be able to be there and then for everyone whose lives could have been touched by his and, you know, to think about all the different friends he could have made and I. I think it would have been a light in their lives.”

FOX 13 News asked Davis Thursday if the family wanted to share or say anything on their behalf.

She told us they just want their privacy to be respected right now. Davis went on to say that the family is truly grateful for all the support and efforts the community is making around them.

In a message from the city, Mayor Dawn Ramsey said the family has asked for privacy following the incident.

“Our community has experienced an unimaginable tragedy with the passing of one of our residents after their family home exploded yesterday,” Ramsey wrote. “Our hearts are broken as we mourn with family, friends, neighbors and all who are grieving during this time. devastating time.”

A GoFundMe page was created to help the family buy food and clothes, as well as cover funeral costs.

Heartbroken by what happened, those who live in the South Jordan neighborhood, like Doramus, believe they will all get over this week’s tragedy together.

“We have the most wonderful neighborhood I’ve ever lived in and I’ve been here a long time … people come and go, but we’re always here to help.”
