City police ensure safety by eliminating potential fire hazard in south Reno

A potential fire hazard in south Reno is now gone thanks to city of Reno code enforcement.

4-Fox 11 News reported in Septemberthat residents living next to a lot in south Reno were concerned about an overcrowded lot filled with weeds and yard debris. It was so thick that you couldn’t see the buildings on the ground. Residents said it was a fire hazard. During the Davis Fire that burned in Washoe Valley, residents say embers the size of quarters landed on that lot. Neighbors were worried that the land would catch fire.

The property is located on Old Virginia Road off Damonte Ranch Parkway.

The Reno Code Administration issued a warning to property owners that weeds and vegetation must be cut by October 17. The city extended that deadline once to Nov. 4, which the owners complied with. Residents are happy.

“I think they are doing a good job on this pitch. What they’ve done is very, very good, but here along the fence there’s a couple of piles that need to be picked up and then I’d say we’re done,” said neighbor Gary Melancon.

The owners previously said they were in their 70s and struggled financially and physically to remove the weeds and did not believe it was a fire hazard.

In addition to convincing the property owners to remove their overgrown brush, the City of Reno’s public works crew also removed excessive weed growth from the adjacent right-of-way.
