At least ten injured, more traumatized in Amsterdam pogrom – Israel News

Following violent attacks against Maccabi Tel Aviv fans following a football match between Maccabi and Ajax on Thursday evening, Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that all Israelis had been contacted, according to Ynet.

While police initially said they were investigating reports of abductions during the attacks, all of the missing Israelis have now been identified.

Local authorities and Israel’s Foreign Ministry have reported that ten Israelis have been injured so far in the pogrom, and members of the consul are currently seeking hospitals.

Authorities say the situation has calmed down in the last hour and Israelis have been instructed to shelter in place. A Dutch police spokeswoman said 62 had been arrested so far.

Before the pogrom, Sky News reported citing social media footage, a small group of Maccabi fans were seen pulling down a Palestinian flag.

Footage circulating on social media showed fans being beaten, chased with knives and narrowly avoiding being hit by vehicles. Eyewitnesses told StandWithUs they saw stabbing attempts, people thrown into a river, extremists beating and spitting on Israelis. Dutch police were dispatched to respond to the attackers.

According to Maariv, there was at least one attempted kidnapping of an Israeli and many barricaded themselves in shops and buildings.

The Israeli Embassy in the Netherlands is working to relocate the Israelis to a safe location.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was informed of the incident and sent two rescue planes to help Israeli citizens. The IDF is coordinating the rescue mission and sending cargo planes and two Hercules squadron planes with medical and rescue teams.

Israel’s two chief rabbis gave El Al permission to fly on Shabbat to provide lifesaving assistance.

The prime minister’s office said Netanyahu views the “horrific incident with the utmost seriousness” and called on the Dutch government and security forces to take “vigorous and swift action against the rioters.”

He spoke to Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof on Friday morning, asking him for increased security for the Jewish community in the Netherlands.

Prime Minister Schoof posted on X that he was following the news from Amsterdam “with horror.”

“Completely unacceptable anti-Semitic attacks on Israelis”.

He added that in his call with Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister stressed that the culprits would be tracked down and prosecuted.

The National Security Council has issued a new warning to Israelis and Jews in the Netherlands.

“Avoid movements on the street and lock yourself in hotel rooms. The externalization of Israeli and Jewish symbols must be avoided.”

Israir, Arkia and El Al added three rescue flights at the behest of the Ministry of Transport.

Details of the incident

Several videos showed Israelis jumping into canals to avoid protesters. A video shows a man being knocked to the ground as he shouts “I’m not Jewish” at them.

“I called my friend and a voice answered in Arabic,” said one man.

“We’re experiencing exactly what they told us at school will never happen again,” another told Maariv.

These attacks come just hours after the country commemorated the 86th anniversary of Kristallnacht.

Said a member of Chabad Amsterdam who was at the game The Jerusalem Post“I’m in shock right now and I hope it’s over soon. I didn’t expect it at all.”

“We will try to help everyone, God willing,” he added.

Israeli fans indicated to journalist Raz Amir that they believe the attack was planned in advance.

According to Amir, the police left the Maccabi Tel Aviv fans alone and did not provide any escort since they boarded the trains and headed to the hotels.

“The Dutch police sold us out for the Arabs to lynch,” one fan told him after escaping the attack and arriving injured and bloodied at Amsterdam airport.

“This looks like a PLANNED and ORGANIZED POGROM in Amsterdam,” the former prime minister said Naphtali Bennett posted.

“A fan told journalist Aviva Klompas that they ran him over, pulling a knife on him.

“We were ambushed… The police here abandoned us. Every fourth person walking the street is a Muslim who has come to attack the Jews.”

Members of the Jewish diaspora were also injured during the attacks, according to the report The Jewish News. A 33-year-old father-of-two from London has been hospitalized after trying to break up a gang attack on an Israeli. The attackers allegedly asked to see his passport to verify that he was a “Yehudi” (Jew).

After initially refusing the request, the 33-year-old victim said: “The next thing I know, he was punched in the face. It was so unexpected. My glasses broke, I split my nose. Blood everywhere. After he punched me, about 20 more came out of their hiding places to actually finish me off. But I stayed on my feet. I said what you’re doing is why you’re not getting any support.”

A member of the gang told the main attacker to fire because the man was British, to which the attacker allegedly replied “Yes, but he helped a Jew”.
