The Tampa Bay Buccaneers donated $10,000 this week to the family of a fan who died in a car accident on the way to the Bucs on Nov. 4 Monday night football game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

According to ESPN’s Jenna LaineConnor Barba, 18, of Norman, Oklahoma, died in a crash in Montgomery County, Kansas on Nov. 2 while driving from Oklahoma to Tampa for the game.

Barba’s mother Megan Barnett, who bought him tickets to the game as an early birthday present, was a passenger and was seriously injured in the crash. She is currently in the intensive care unit at a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

A car reportedly crossed into Barba’s lane on a two-lane road and hit Barba’s vehicle head-on. Both Barba and the other driver died, but Barba’s uncle Collin Barnett said he may have saved his mother’s life by slamming on the brakes.

Barba was a big fan of Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, who played college football in Barba’s hometown of Norman at the University of Oklahoma.

Mayfield released a statement regarding Barba’s death, saying:

“My thoughts and prayers go out to Megan and her family as they deal with this heartbreaking loss. I am honored and humbled to know that Connor was such a big fan. I would have liked to meet him. I realize there are no words that can offer true comfort at a time like this, but I hope Megan makes a full recovery and draws strength from the outpouring of support she is receiving from across the country. “

Mayfield also told ESPN through a Buccaneers spokesman that he and his wife, Emily, plan to contact Barba’s family.
