What is it and when is the deadline to have it?

  • Starting May 7, 2025, travelers will need a Real ID-compatible document, such as a driver’s license or state-issued ID, to fly into the country.
  • Real IDs can be obtained from local motor vehicle departments and require documents such as proof of identity, residence and legal status.
  • The deadline was pushed back from 2020 to 2025 due to backlogs at the Division of Motor Vehicles offices during the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you’re already planning your 2025 summer vacation, you might want to add getting a real ID to your to-do list if you don’t have one.

The “official” deadline is six months, but it’s not too early to make sure you’re flying free and clear.

Any state-issued ID without a stamp does not meet the “minimum security standards” established by the Real ID Act of 2005, which automatically prevent travelers from flying domestically and accessing a federal facility.

When is the deadline for getting real ID?

All travelers interested in flying across the country have until May 7, 2025 to obtain an ID card or driver’s license with a Real ID stamp, as mandated by the Department of Homeland Security. (Unless they have a passport.)

The requirement was originally set to go into effect in 2020, but has been delayed until May 2025 due to “delayed transactions” at Motor Vehicle Division offices across the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic, USA TODAY reported.

mountains of paper, according to the department, affected agencies’ ability to make real progress in rolling out Real ID. But this time, the deadline is really real

This means that federal agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration, will not be able to accept state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards that are not Real ID compliant.

Do I need real ID if I have a passport?

Not. Any travelers who have an updated passport or any other TSA approved form of identification does not need a real ID to travel in the country.

What are other TSA approved alternatives?

Other TSA-approved alternatives include:

  • State-issued enhanced driver’s license
  • DHS Cards for Trusted Travelers (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • US Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
  • Border crossing card
  • An acceptable photo ID issued by a tribal nation/federally recognized Indian tribe
  • Card HSPD-12 PIV
  • Passport issued by foreign government
  • Canadian provincial driver’s license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
  • Transport worker identification credential
  • US Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
  • US Merchant Mariner Accreditation
  • Veterans Health Identification Card (VHIC)

Where can I get a real ID?

You can get a Real ID driver’s license or ID card from your local Department of Motor Vehicles. It takes approx two weeksor 15 working daysto process IDs.

All Real IDs will have a stamp in the right corner to show they are federally compliant. The symbol stamped on the real ID card will vary depending on the state of issue.

The enhanced IDs, which are issued in only a handful of states, including Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York and Vermont, are considered acceptable alternatives to REAL ID-compliant cards, the department says.
