Winter storm paralyzes New Mexico, Colorado

LITTLETON, Colo. – Drivers stuck in snow had to be rescued overnight Friday in New Mexico as potentially historical winter the storm had dumped over 3 feet of snow New Mexico and COLORADOwith more to come.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis declared a disaster emergency Thursday and deployed the National Guard to provide winter weather support. New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham issued two statewide emergency declarations, freeing up $1.5 million to help state agencies untangle.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office in New Mexico reported rescuing several drivers stranded on state and local roads Thursday evening and overnight.

The storm caused the impossible travel conditions along Interstate 25 and Interstate 40 in New Mexico through Saturday.

Brandon Copic, FOX Weather’s exclusive storm tracker, reported that even snow plows were stuck on I-25 near Trinidad, Colorado. The semi truck drivers were forced to pull over on the side of the interstate while officials transported them to warming centers.

Much of I-25 remains closed in the northern part of the state, including Raton Pass leading into Colorado. That interstate closure continues as far north as Pueblo. The Colorado Department of Transportation has issued a severe travel advisory and winter storm warnings for I-70 east of Denver. Numerous state roads are closed in both states.

National Meteorological Service from Albuquerque reported that more than 100 vehicles were stranded on state highways after a semi truck was jackknifed Thursday afternoon.

Portions of I-70 in Colorado were closed Wednesday due to same system.

The FOX Forecast Center reports that the storm will hit the mountains of New Mexico with extremes snow not seen in november for years.

“By the time the storm is over, we could be talking about up to 6 feet of snow totals along the eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains,” said FOX meteorologist Stephen McCloud.

TIPS FOR DRIVING ON SNOW

An Emergency Blizzard warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for northeastern New Mexico until Friday at 8 p.m. local time.

Meteorologist Craig Herrera thought the best day to travel would be Sunday.

New Mexico’s largest electricity supplier, Power New Mexicoreported that the storm caused widespread power outages across the state on Thursday. According to the company’s outage map, at least 43,000 customers were affected that afternoon. Some of those outages have been restored, with more than eight thousand customers still in the dark as of Friday morning.

HOW TO GET THE FOX WEATHER

The Denver metro area saw a break in accumulation Thursday, but conditions are expected to deteriorate further Thursday through Saturday as the storm turns back north. The heaviest snow is expected Friday night.
