GROTON, CT (WFSB) – A 21-year-old man died in a motorcycle accident that happened in Groton early Friday morning.

Groton City Police identified the rider as Elijah W. Hummel of Groton.

According to police, they responded to the crash on Fort Hill Road around 12:45 p.m

An officer reported that a motorcycle was down in the roadway and its operator was located nearby with serious injuries.

The officer immediately requested additional first responders and emergency medical services to respond to the scene to assist.

The rider, later identified as Hummel, was transported to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Hummel was pronounced dead by medical personnel upon arrival.

The initial crash investigation revealed that Hummel was driving a 2024 Kawasaki ZX-400 and was westbound on Fort Hill Road at a high rate of speed. Police said he lost control of his motorcycle and crossed the eastbound travel lane of Fort Hill Road and struck an unoccupied Jeep Cherokee that was parked in front of Midway Pizza.

Fort Hill Road between Depot and South roads was closed to traffic while the crash was investigated. It has since reopened.

The crash remains under investigation, police said.
