Prediction Oregon Ducks vs. Maryland Terrapins: Odds, Expert Picks, QB Matchups, Betting Trends & Stats

Oregon (9-0) remains undefeated, gaining weekly momentum after narrow wins in the first two games of the season against Idaho and Boise State. Since then, the Ducks have crushed @Oregon State, @UCLA and Michigan State by a combined score of 114-37 and re-established themselves as a feared program in Big Ten play. While the Ducks’ offense ranks 4th in completion rate and 7th in EPA/game, they don’t stretch the field like they did last year, ranking 117th, averaging 4.5 yards per completion and 93 in rushing yards. Defensively, their secondary is excellent, but OU is decidedly weak on the ground, ranking 99th in EPA/rush and 89th in rushing yards.

Maryland (4-4) is off to a 3-1 start with wins over UConn and @UVA in addition to a 27-24 loss to Michigan State where Maryland had just a 10% win expectation. Although they dropped a 42-28 decision to undefeated Indiana, the Terps actually had the smallest margin of defeat of any team Indiana has played this season, which is a feat in itself. They were outscored by Northwestern, who outscored UM 37-10, before the Terps came back to win 29-28 over USC. HC Mike Locksley’s offense is a pass-oriented group that ranks in the top 20 in both passing and completion rate (68.4%). A group of linebackers that rank 7th in disaster rate bolsters a credible run defense that ranks 13th in rushing yards and 19th in yards after contact allowed.

NBC Sports Betting Best Bet

NBC sports betting analyst Eric Froton (@CFFroton) thinks:
“With Oregon holding opponents to 14 points or less in 6 of 9 matchups and having the advantage of playing in contested conditions at Autzen Stadium, I don’t think Maryland can run the ball well enough to break open the passing game against OU. I’m rooting for Maryland to go under their team total of 16.5 points.”

Running backs for Maryland @ Oregon

  • Oregon: Dillon Gabriel is in the midst of his sixth collegiate campaign, amassing an impressive 17,530 passing yards and a 144-to-31 ratio over his illustrious career. He’s making 74.8% of his throws (#1 in FBS) for 9.3 YPA and a 19-to-5 ratio for the still-undefeated Ducks, but his 6.9 ADOT is the lowest average target depth among the qualifiers. The short-range passing emphasis explains Oregon’s unusually low 15.9 percent explosive passing rate, which ranks 80th in the FBS. While Oregon currently has a crisp 52% pass completion rate (5th in the FBS), Gabriel should have little trouble moving the ball through the air against Maryland despite losing best WR Tez Johnson for the rest of the regular season.
  • Maryland: Billy Edwards Jr. beat out four-star NC State transfer QB MJ Morris for the starting gig and ran with the job, completing a commendable 69.5 percent of his throws for 2,314 passing yards and a 13-to-6 ratio while recorded an 84.1. PFF offensive grade that ranks as the 18th best among P4 quarterbacks. Edwards got the ball out of his hands in an average of 2.28 seconds, which is the second-fastest release time in the country. Edwards leads a fairly conservative Terps passing attack that ranks 118th in explosive passing rate, but also 31st with a 1.8 percent interception rate that rarely puts their defense in a compromising position.

Betting trends and recent statistics

  • Oregon’s secondary has been at its best when the game is on the line, allowing just seven completions on 21 targets in close and late situations, the lowest completion rate allowed among P4 programs.
  • Conversely, QB Dillon Gabriel completed 86% of his passes in close and late situations (18-of-21), the highest mark in the P4.
  • Maryland’s offensive line was strong in pass protection, allowing a 28 percent (37th) pressure rate with a 3.8 percent (35th) sack rate. However, they rank a disappointing 124th with a run blocking rate of 12.3% and 104th in yards before contact (1.33).
  • The Terps’ pass defense was a step down from recent seasons, ranking 109th, allowing 21% of completions to gain 20+ yards, while ranking 116th in yards per dropback allowed ( 7.3 meters).
