Will the Jaguars shut down Trevor Lawrence after an injury?

The Jacksonville Jaguars season went south very quickly. At 2-7, taking on the NFC contending Minnesota Vikings in Week 10 is a tough task to overcome.

The Jaguars season has been derailed by the team not playing up to expectations, playing ineptly and catching the injury bug all season long on both sides of the ball.

This week was no better for the Jaguars.

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is unlikely to play in Week 10 against the Minnesota Vikings, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

“I’m doing everything I can to be there,” Lawrence said earlier this week. “Like in the past, I’ve been hit in the past. So I’m trying to do everything I can during the week to get ready to play on Sunday and put in as much time as I can for that and get healthy.”

Lawrence injured his shoulder in Week 9. The The Jaguars will likely start former first-round pick Mac Jones against the Vikings if Lawrence is ruled out.

Now with Lawrence injured and the Jaguars unlikely to compete for a playoff spot, will the Jaguars and Lawrence himself consider shutting it down for the rest of the season?

Lawrence signed a five-year, $275 million contract extension this offseason. There is no doubt that Lawrence is the quarterback of the future for the Jaguars.

Pete Prisco, CBS Sports NFL Senior Columnist had some interesting comments about Trevor Lawrence’s injury.

“The smartest thing for Trevor Lawrence to do is hang it up and wait for Ben Johnson,” Prisco said. “The offense and the personnel really affected that kid. Close it”.

It will be interesting to see how the Jaguars approach this situation with their franchise quarterback. If the staff and organization feel the season is already over, it would make sense to protect your franchise player from further injury.

The Jaguars bye is in Week 12. That will give Lawrence more time to heal if he returns. It will also give the organization more time to make a final decision. Regardless, a disastrous season seems to be rolling on.
