UTSA students on edge after recent incidents at University Oaks

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA students living at University Oaks remain on high alert tonight.

Campus housing is owned by the villages that live on campus.

With recent safety concerns, University Oaks held a community meeting for residents to discuss their concerns.

Just last month, on October 6, an alleged sexual assault took place at University Oaks. A man entered the apartment through an unlocked window, assaulted a resident and then fled the scene.

Now, recently on November 3rd, UTSA received a report of a suspicious male at the same apartment complex.

UTSA released pictures of the man accused of sexual assault.

I spoke with a sophomore at UTSA who didn’t want to be on camera.

“I’m not sure if anyone is really doing anything about it because University Oaks has never had a good reputation,” she said.

She feels uneasy living at University Oaks, especially at night, and takes precautions by going out with friends.

“Only the incidents happened. Wondering if this is the right place to live. So it’s scary,” she added.

Taylor Waddill, a UTSA freshman who lives at University Oaks, says the reported sexual assault was just below her apartment.

“We just have to be cautious and we’ve created, for example, 360 circles of life and we might move. We don’t know yet,” Waddill said.

In response to the recent incidents, UTSA says it has increased police presence, placed mobile video cameras in the area, held safety meetings, shared safety information and worked with the apartment complex to ensure proper gate access operation.

They tell us the investigation is still ongoing.

I have reached out to the villages that live on campus but have yet to hear back.
