Deputies in Colorado make the homeless return stolen property, then buy them food

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – A powerful moment was captured on a body camera in Colorado this week.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office shared the story on social media Thursday, explaining Sgt. Swank and Deputy Abrams responded to a theft call at Walgreens on Monday.

“They located two suspects nearby and discovered that they had stolen nearly $300 in food items, mostly food and beverages,” the sheriff’s office wrote on social media. “The man and woman, who were homeless, were very cooperative and apologetic and admitted that they had spent their money on drugs because of their addiction, but they were cold and hungry and hadn’t eaten in 24 hours .”

In the video, you can hear Sgt. Swank asks the man to take the cart full of stolen goods back to the store. You can see the employee scanning the items, but then Sgt. Swank did something that went beyond his oath to protect and serve. Sgt. Swank bought the food, toothbrushes and toothpaste they stole and gave them to the man and woman.

“The suspects were still charged with a crime, but thank you Sgt. Please me for the kindness and compassion you have shown,” the social media post adds.
