Schools canceled, roads closed due to flooding in several SC counties

AIKEN, SC (WRDW/WAGT) – Some schools were delayed while others were canceled along with several road closures in Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg and Orangeburg counties due to heavy flooding, according to officials.

FEMA assistance now includes Wilkes County and child care

Aiken County

Aiken County Public School District officials announced that due to extensive rainfall that has caused flooding, washouts and road closures throughout the county, schools and offices will operate on a two-hour delayed schedule on Thursday, November 7th.

Due to the late start, only lunch will be served in our cafeterias tomorrow. Half-day students, including early learning special education students and others, will not come to school Thursday because buses will not be able to run mid-day routes, officials say.

The Aiken County Career Center will not have morning classes. Students will report to the high school two hours late. Rain is expected throughout the day, according to the district.

Please use extreme caution when traveling to school and work. If you encounter flooded roads, please turn back, officials advise.

The Aiken Department of Public Safety has closed the following roads:

  • Whiskey Road from Knox Avenue to Grace Avenue
  • Intersection of University Parkway and Vaucluse Road
  • Price Avenue between Whiskey Road and Two Notch

Officials are urging drivers to seek alternate routes and avoid these areas until further notice.

Best Friend Express public transport buses will run with a two-hour delay on November 7 also due to flooding.

Allendale County

Allendale County School District officials have announced that due to the forecast of heavy rain throughout the afternoon, all events and after school activities will be canceled on Thursday, November 7th.

The authorities ask that you make arrangements for your child to be picked up promptly at the usual dismissal time.

Bamberg County

Because of worsening road conditions, all Bamberg County schools will switch to an eLearning day Thursday, officials say.

Students should follow their distance learning plans and log in as instructed by teachers. Additionally, all after school programs and activities are canceled for today.

Orangeburg County

At 8:30 a.m., Orangeburg County School District officials announced that due to ongoing weather conditions, difficult roads and the condition of some school buildings, all Orangeburg County School District schools will be closed on Thursday.

“This decision was made with the safety and well-being of our students and staff as our top priority,” officials said.

Around 7 a.m., officials initially announced that due to heavy rain and difficult road conditions in our area, all schools in the Orangeburg County School District would be operating on a three-hour delay.

Officials with the Orangeburg County Emergency Operations Center said the county is experiencing flash flooding in portions of central and western Orangeburg County, with several roads closed.

Flash flooding occurs in many areas. Please limit travel and use extreme caution, officials urge.
