Rick Scott sees red tide as ‘best case scenario’ for Senate leadership bid as he lobbies Trump for support

FIRST ON FOX: Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., is coming off the high a better than expected re-election margin in Florida and going straight into campaign mode for next week’s Republican Senate race. His first project: Get the support of President-elect Donald Trump.

The Florida Republican is actively lobbying his ally, who is now and former president-elect, for his endorsement ahead of the GOP leadership race to determine who will succeed. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.a senior Scott source told Fox News Digital.

In fact, the election gave Trump a mandate and “this is the best-case scenario for Rick Scott,” they said.

Trump has not endorsed anyone in the leadership race, which currently includes candidates Scott, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texasand Senate Minority Whip John Thune, RS.D. He also didn’t say if he would eventually weigh in.

Scott spoke with Trump after their election victories, telling FOX Business’ Larry Kudlow that they were “texting back and forth.”

He expressed hope that Trump would support him in the race, which is heating up quickly.

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., made his own endorsement Scott and urged Trump to do the same on “The Jesse Kelly Show” on Thursday. He told host Jesse Kelly to ask the president-elect to “come out publicly” in support of Scott if he has any influence over Trump.

A familiar source also shared with Fox News Digital that Thune was in touch with both Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance after the election.

However, the South Dakota Republican has a different perspective than Scott and suggested that Trump should not get involved in the Senate GOP leadership race.

“It’s probably in his best interest to stay out of it,” he said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Thursday.

“Obviously, if he wanted to, he could exert considerable influence on that,” Thune admitted.

He noted that his preference is that Trump not publicly endorse it.

Thune and Trump had a previously fractured relationship, which they have patched up in recent months. The senator first endorsed Sen. Tim Scott, RS.C., in the Republican presidential primary before eventually endorsing Trump.

Asked about potential friction with Trump, which McConnell handled, Cornyn said: “My experience with President Trump is that you can tell him the truth in private and he’s willing to listen. And sometimes he is willing to do what you suggest. Other times. he may disagree, and that is his prerogative, but we had four successful years during his first term.

The election of the leader will take place by secret ballot at the Republican conference on November 13. McConnell does not plan to endorse the race.
