Updated at 12:45 p.m. Thursday, November 7

A woman has been charged with two felonies, including attempted murder, following an incident Wednesday night near a work zone on Hatteras Island.

According to Detective Donnie Varnell, 65-year-old Susan Elizabeth Myers was driving her vehicle near the Gingerbread Bakery and Pizza when she allegedly struck a contractor employee who was replacing electrical transmission poles in Frisco.

Witnesses stayed with Myers until authorities arrived. Dare County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene in the 52700 block of NC Highway 12 in Frisco at approximately 8:20 p.m.

One person was taken to Outer Banks Hospital for injuries and has since been released, according to Investigator Varnell.

Myers, who has a Maryland address listed in the arrest report but lives in Frisco, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury and felony assault with a deadly weapon.

She is being held at the Dare County Detention Center in lieu of $75,000 bail.

This is a developing story and the Island Free Press will publish more details as they become available.
