Over $12,000 lost to scammers claiming to be from SP Group

SINGAPORE – If you’ve received emails or text messages from utility operator SP Group about overdue or overpaid bills, beware.

Police said there has been an increase in scams where scammers send emails or text messages purporting to be from the company, with at least seven such cases reported since October 1.

Losses totaled at least $12,000, police said Nov. 7.

Victims had received a text message or email purporting to be from SP Group telling them they were either overcharged or had outstanding utility bills.

They were then asked to click on a link to pay their bill or request a refund of the overcharge.

A line in one of the emails read: “Important: This link is only valid for 24 hours. Please act now.”

While the text of the hyperlink appeared legitimate, it took users to a malicious website impersonating SP Group.

Believing they were on SP Group’s actual website, victims entered their personal information and credit or debit card details.

It was only later that they realized they had been duped after discovering unauthorized transactions, which in some cases were made in foreign currency.

When receiving unsolicited emails asking for payment or personal information, people should look for tactics that prompt the recipient to act quickly, as well as suspicious links that don’t match the hyperlink text, police said.

Members of the public should also ensure that the sender’s email address matches that of the company the emails claim to be from.
