Passage of Amendment 3 will restore abortion rights in Missouri

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Voters in Missouri’s Tuesday general election passed Amendment 3, meaning abortion procedures could soon resume in the state.

For two years, it was a back-and-forth battle initially sparked by the US Supreme Court Flipping reproductive rights under Roe v. Wade.

It has led to women’s advocates like Lauren Conaway having conversations they never imagined they would have.

“I can look at Prop 3 and say, ‘Oh Missouri passed,'” said Conaway, founder of InnovateHER KC.

Conaway is a vocal advocate for women and their rights in the KC area. That’s why he founded InnovateHER KC.

The passage of the 3rd Amendment and the repeal of Roe v. Wade are personal to her.

She had an abortion when she was 19.

“Whenever this topic comes up, I get a phone call … at least one,” Conaway said. “Not because I’m very clear or possess legal knowledge. It’s because I’m one of the few people willing to go on camera and say, ‘Not only did I exercise my right to choose at one point, but it made my life better.’

While Conaway questioned some decisions Missourians made in Tuesday’s election, she expected voters to pass Amendment 3.

“I think I was vindicated that people believe that human beings deserve agency and autonomy and privacy and all of these things that we used to think were inalienable rights suddenly weren’t,” she said.

Passing Amendment 3 does not immediately allow abortions.

Hours after it passed, Planned Parenthood and other advocates filed a petition in Jackson County Circuit Court, which is asking a judge to strike down current laws and regulations banning abortion in Missouri.

Planned Parenthood said abortion services could resume as early as Dec. 5.

But first, a judge must rule on their request.

“We heard the voters of Missouri last night,” Conaway said. “We have to get to the point where that’s never a question anymore.”
