What’s involved in Donald Trump’s border security plan?

(NewsNation) — President-elect Donald Trump made securing the US’s southern border a centerpiece of his campaign for a second term in the White House, saying he would execute the largest internal deportation in American history as soon as he takes office.

Now as they look to January after defeating Vice President Kamala HarrisTrump is laying out what other policies will be part of his plan to solve the country’s immigration problems. Trump promised supporters early Wednesday morning that he would “fix our borders” and “fix everything about our country.”

As part of his border plan, Trump has pledged to go after the roughly 1.5 million immigrants in the U.S. who have already received an official removal order. These immigrants include those who have been told by a judge that they do not qualify for asylum. Trump has also pledged to target immigrants who have been convicted of crimes and entered the US illegally.

Trump has also pledged to eliminate Temporary Protected Status for immigrants, including those from Haiti who currently reside in Springfield, Ohio. Vice President Elect and Ohio Senator JD Vance joined Trump in the effort to eliminate due process for these immigrants.

Trump’s border plan also involves heavily supporting local law enforcement officers and members of the military to help secure the southern border. However, local law enforcement officials such as Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels in Arizona, said he is concerned about how his already stretched department can help federal agents try to apprehend immigrants.

Dannels told NewsNation he would have to see the details of what that plan would look like.

However, after Trump was projected to win the White House early Wednesday morning, border agents expressed a renewed sense of energy now that Trump will be back in the Oval Office and told NewsNation they feel again empowered to do their job.

Trump said he would hire 10,000 additional agents to help secure the border. However, agents who were hired after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 are now set to retire within the next two years, making the timing of the new hires critical.
