MESA, Arizona (KPHO/Gray News ) – Authorities in Arizona say an investigation is underway into the cause of a plane crash that killed several people Tuesday afternoon near an airport in the Mesa area.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, a Honda HA-420 jet attempted to abort takeoff before crashing through an airport perimeter fence and colliding with a vehicle.

The accident happened around 16:45 Greenfield and McKellips roadsjust southwest of Falcon Field Airport.

An aerial video from the scene showed heavy smoke billowing where the plane and vehicle collided.

Five people were on board the plane, four of whom died on the spot. They were identified as:

  • Spencer Lindahl, 43
  • Rustin Randall, 48
  • Drew Kimball, 44
  • Graham Kimball, 12

Sources confirmed that Randall was the pilot of the group flying to Provo, Utah.

Mesa Police say one person on the plane survived and was taken to the hospital with burns.

The driver of the vehicle also died in the fiery accident but was yet to be identified as next of kin notifications were pending.
